Located in Chiang Mai University, the Confucius Institute was set up by Yunnan Normal University (YNNU) and Chiang Mai University (CMU). It was officially launched on 20 July, 2005, at the first World Chinese Conference in Beijing.

Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand and the economic and cultural center of northern Thailand. It has a high concentration of people with Chinese-Thai ancestry, making Chinese a much spoken language in the region. Chinese is taught in many primary schools, high schools, and universities.

Chang Mai University is recognized as one of the best universities in northern Thailand. The Confucius Institute has an office, a reading room and an established library of over 3200 volumes of books and videos.

The institute provides learners with experienced Chinese teachers, classic and authoritative textbooks, and a genuine Chinese learning environment, with access to electronic resources. It also offer information regarding academic study in China and organizes academic study tours to China.
