Founded in 1960, Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) was named as Royal Khmer University, which was formed by six faculties and schools and French was used as the language of instruction. In 1970, Royal Khmer University was changed to Phnom Penh University and became Royal University of Phnom Penh in 1996.
RUPP is located at the western of Phnom Penh, about five kilometers from central of the city, on the Russian Federation Blvd.
Nowadays, RUPP consists of Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Science and Humanity, Institute of Foreign Languages and Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center. In the Faculty of Science, there are six departments, which are Dpt. of Biology, Dpt. of Chemistry, Dpt. of Computer Science, Dpt. of Environmental Science, Dpt. of Mathematics, and Dpt. of Physics. In the Faculty of Social Science and Humanity, there are 9 Dpts., which are Dpt. of Geography, Dpt. of History, Dpt. of Khmer Literature, Dpt. of Linguistics, Dpt. of Media and Communication/Cambodia Communication Institute, Dpt. of Philosophy, Dpt. of Psychology, Dpt. of Sociology and Dpt. of Tourism. The Institute of Foreign Languages of RUPP is providing local students the bachelor degree of English, French, and Japanese Language and non-degree in Korean and Thai Language.
RUPP is offering four years bachelor degree to local student. Beside bachelor degree, we are conducting a Pre-Master in Mathematics and some Master degree programs such as Master in Development Studies, Master of Education, Master Science in Chemistry, Master of Information System, Master of Biodiversity Conservation, Master of Sociology-anthropology, Master of Education English, and Master of Linguistics.
In academic year 2006-07, there are over 7,000 students studying at RUPP. Since RUPP is a public institution, we usually accept student and start the class in September and in October after the High School National Examination.
