Mount Putuo is one of four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism, together with Mount Wutai in Shanxi Province, Mount Emei in Sichuan, and Mount Jiuhua in Anhui. Many of the mountain's shrines and temples are dedicated to Avalokiteshvara (known in Chinese as Guanyin).
Mount Putuo is actually a small island among the 1,300 Zhoushan islands. Shaping like a blue dragon lying in the blue sea, it covers an area of 13m2,setting itself opposite to Shenjiamen in the Zhoushan islands. With the reputation of Buddhist land between the sky and sea, and Holy land of the South Sea, the mountain was in the first batch to become the Key National Park of China. And on May 8, 2007, Mount Putuo Scenic area of Zhoushan city was officially approved by the National Tourism Administration as the AAAAA scenic area. As the saying goes: there’s a mountain of immortal on the blue sea, shrouded in the mist where one hardly see”, owing to its attractive mystery, sacredness and amazement, Mountain Putuo enjoys a reputation home and abroad.
