The Three Gorges, Qutang, Wuxia, Xiling lie on the upstream of the Yangtze River, thus get the name. It starts from Baidicheng on the west of Fengjie County, Chongqing, reaches Nanjinguan of Yichang County, Hubei Province on the east, with a stretch of about 204 km.
Qutang Gorge starts from Wushan to Badongguang Ferry, Wuxia Gorge starts from Xiangxi of Zigui to Naninguang. The steep mountains rise on either side about 1000-1500 meters above the sea level, creating one nature’s most fantastic sights. The Gorges vary from 300 meters at their widest to less than 100 metres at their narrowest. The watercourse is winding with dangerous rapid shoals, reefs, sharp turns, and whirlpools. Here is a poem, “At first we doubt that there is no way out, suddenly the way ahead become so wide.”
