Dazu Rock Carvings are religious rock carvings in the late Tang Dynasty and the early Song Dynasty with the main theme of Buddhism, well known for its comprisal of more than 10,000 magnificent sculptures; especially the ones at Beishan Mountain and Baodingshan (Precious Crown Hill) are the great ancient Chinese stone carving art.
Cliffside carvings at Beishan Mountain are located in Chongqing Muncipality within the steep hillsides at the northern side of Dazu County of 1.5 km away. The carvings, about over 300 meters in length, is the national key cultural relic protection unit and the world's cultural heritage — an important part of Dazu Rock Carvings. The earliest carvings were begun in the first year of Jingfu(892 A.D.) during the late Tang Dynasty, over the five dynasties from Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han and Later Zhou Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty, finished in 1162 A.D. At present the existing series of sculptures and carvings are more than 4,600, among which there are 264 grottoes and niches, 1 drawing and 8 rock pillars with inscriptions and epigraphs, representative of outstanding achievements of Chinese grotto art at the late stage.
