Dujiangyan Dam, at the west of Dujiangyan City in Sichuan Province, is located in the Minjiang River at the western part of the Chengdu Plain. The project of Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built in 256 BC; it is the oldest dam in history. Unlike contemporary dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water go through naturally. It is a national key culture relic protection unit, well-known for its breath-taking scenery and numerous cultural relics in the vicinity. Mainly are: Fulongguan, ErwangTemple, Anlan Bridge, Yuleiguan, Lidui Park, Yulei Shan Park, Ling Yan Temple and so on.
The ancient project consists of three major projects, namely the Yuzui water-dividing Dike, the Feishayan Spillway and the Baopingkou Water Inlet as well as some sub-project BaiZhang Dike, Shunshui Dike at Erwang Temple and Renzi Dike. This system still controls the waters of the Minjiang River by means of scientific solution to the automatic diversion of the river, automatic flushing, water flow control and other issues, distributing it to the fertile farmland of the Chengdu plains, changing it from “the land flourishing with floods and drought” to “the land of abundance”. The dam has been playing a role in flood control and irrigation for over two thousand years. Up to 1998, the irrigation area of Dujiangyan has reached more than 40 counties, stretching over 668,700 hectares.
