Yulong landscape of Yulong Snow Mountain is the subtropical high mountain of Yunnan. It forms a complete vertical natural landscape of containing the subtropical, temperate zone to frigid zone from the foot of the mountain to the peak. Rich in natural tourist resources, the scenic area can be divided into different kinds such as the snow-covered landscape • glacier, alpine meadow landscape, forest landscape, snow-capped mountains, and so on. Its main peak Fan Steep Peak, 5596 meters above sea level, is the mountain of the lowest latitudes in the northern hemisphere and the highest mountain above sea level. It is located in the northwest part of Lijiang, Yunnan Province, running north to south, 13 km wide from South to North and 35 km long from East to West, opposite to Haba Snow Mountain, the surging Jinsha River surrounding it. Yulong Snow Mountain, known as the "stone wave ouro" in Naxi nationality, means silver white sands of rock. The whole snow mountain is consisted of 13 peaks with longitudinal arrangement from the north to the south, stretches over nearly 50 km, 13 km wide from East to West. Yulong Snow Mountain is magnificent, beautiful and tall and straight with refined style like crystalized jade; brilliant as 13 swords; backed by the blue sky, like a silver dragon dancing eternally, thus named Yulong Hill. Because the lithological character of Yulong Snow Mountain is mainly limestone as well as basalt, black and white, it is also known as the "black-and-white snow-capped mountain" as a result.
Yulong Snow Mountain is a sacred mountain in the eyes of Lijiang and Naxi nation, the guardian of Naxi, "Sanduo" is the embodiment of the Yulong Snow Mountain, and a grand "Sanduo Festival" is celebrated annually. In the period of Nanzhao State, Tang Dynasty, the kingYi Mouxun gave homage to Yulong Snow Mountain, named it as the “North Yue”, so far the North Yuemiao temple still remains, the yard is still deep with Buddha, becoming a holy place for the numerous pilgrims to come to worship. During the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan came to Lijiang, appointing Yulong Snow Mountain as "Grand Sacred Snow Stone North Yue Anbang Jing King". Yulong Snow Mountain – with charming scenery and mysterious legends- is always a true miracle for visitors to behold. Because of the steep cliff of the main peak, the mountain is yet to be conquered, albeit mountaineering teams from home and abroad have tried.
In 1988, Yulong Snow Mountain in the name of Yunan Lijiang Yulong Snow Mountain scenic spots was approved by the State Council to be included in the list of the second batch of national scenic spots. Yulong Snow Mountain of Lijiang was officially approved by the National Tourism Administration to be the national AAAAA scenic area on May 8, 2007.
