It is a national AAAAA scenic area, a national geological park.
Situated twelve kilometers away from the west of Pingliang City, Gansu Province, Mountain Kongtong is an important fort for going out of Guanzhong in the ancient Silk Road. From the Mountain Kongtong, you can have a bird’s eye view of Xi’an in the east. Meanwhile, it lies on Lanzhou in the west, Baoji in the south and stretches to Yinchuan in the north. The scenic area covers 84 square kilometers and its main peak is 2,123 meters above the sea level. It integrates with marvelous and precipitous, exquisite and beautiful natural ecological sight and quaint and consummate human historical sights, which endow it high ornamental value, cultural value and scientific investigation value. And it has been reputed as “the first mountain on the way to the Silk Road (when one passed westward from Guanzhong)”, “the greatest wonder of Xizhen” and “The beauty of Mountain Kongtong is incomparable”.
As a branch range of the Mount Liupan, Mount Kongtong is a natural kingdom teeming with more than 1,000 species of plants and more than 300 species of animals and it is rich in forest resource with the cover rate of more than 90%. In Mountain Kongtong scenic area, overlapping steep and majestic peaks and ridges, towering and dangerous cliffs and precipices make you wonder if they are indeed completed by some mystical force with magic weapon of nature; the vast and immense forest wrapped in mist and smog likes a misty and dimly discernible fairyland; the water of the calm, capacious lake between the steep, high gorges and the sky blends in one color, which gives the area the same romantic charm as that of Li River. The scenic area owns not only the grandeur of northern mountains, but the beauty of southern scenery. The elegant and dignified eight platforms, nine palaces, twelve yards, forty-two buildings and seventy-two stone houses are majestic and grand with rich and brilliant culture.
Since time immemorial, Mount Kongtong has attracted numerous refined tasteful and talent scholars. Huang Emperor Xuanyuan, respected as Father of the Nation by Chinese Nation, had climbed Mountain Kongtong in person to consult the wise, Guang Chenzi about the strategies of running a country and the way of keeping health. The great event of Huang Emperor’s consultation has been recorded in Zhuangzi·Zaiyou, Shiji and other ancient books. Qin Shi Huang and Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty had followed Huang Emperor to climb Mountain Kongtong from the west because they both admired what Huang Emperor had did and believed the existence of immortals. Sima Qian, Wang Fu, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, Zhao Shichun, Lin Zexu, Tan Sitong and many other poets and scholars left a great number of wonderful poems, brilliant articles, handsome stone tablets and beautiful inscriptions. The martial arts of Kongtong, together with that of Shaolin, Wudang, Emei and Kunlun, are well-known in China.
