Baotou-Lanzhou Railway crosses the desert six times in the city of Zhongwei. Shapotou is the steepest place with the fiercest sand storm. In order to ensure smoothness of the railway traffic and prevent rails being covered by sand, the project of windbreak and sand fixation in both sides of the railway had been carried out since 1950s. We have made a great success. Now, the net-like grass squares on both sides of the railway are covered with psammophyte. The green wave is rolling in the golden ocean of sand. The part of the railway in desert has been safe and sound for several dozens of years. The sand-treatment achievement attracts a lot of academic attention from the people engaged in desertification control all over the world so that many experts on desertification control come here for investigation.
