YANGON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar will launch a media center at the famous Ngwesaung beach resort in southwestern Ayeyawaddy division in October this year to facilitate travelers in getting timely info about the weather condition while visiting the resort, the local Myanmar Posts reported Tuesday.
A website carrying the latest weather news will be in English, said the report.
The Ayayawaddy division was once deadly hit by cyclone Nargis in May 2008 and fewer number of foreign tourists visited the region in 2009.
Since then, monthly tourist-attracting traditional festive activities have been introduced in Ngwesaung in a bid to pick up the declined tourist arrivals.
As part of the efforts, two lighting festivals were respectively held in October and November, Christmas and new year in December last year, and ethnic Kayin new year festival in January this year.
Consequently, in 2009-10 fiscal year, Ngwesaung attracted over 6,000 tourists, three times higher than the previous years.
With a coastline extending about 14 kilometers, the Ngwesaung stands the nearest beach resort from Yangon, traditionally attracting a large number of foreign visitors rather than locals.
According to official statistics, tourist arrivals in Myanmar hit 227,400 in 2009, up 25 percent compared with 2008.
