Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir met with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen who was attending the opening ceremony of the 24th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 17 July, 1991. China's participation in the 24th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting was the first official contract between ASEAN and China, which launched ASEAN-China dialogue relations.
