ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) actively participated in the 7th ASEAN-China Forum on Social Development and Poverty Reduction in Fangchenggang City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on 21-23 August 2013. The Forum was hosted by the Chinese State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development (LGOP) and People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, organized by the International Poverty Reduction Centre in China (IPRCC) and Poverty Alleviation Office of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and supported by international institutions, including the United Nations Development Program (UNPD), ASEAN Secretariat, ADB and other relevant organizations.
The Forum focused on 4 agenda items, namely; Poverty Reduction in the Urbanization Process, Migration Patterns and Socioeconomic Development, Public Services, Social Inclusion and Social Management Innovation and Integrated Urban-rural Development and Post MDGs Agenda. The participants of more than 300 persons from all 10 ASEAN Member States, ASEAN Secretariat, relevant Chinese Ministries and Entities, NGOs and international organizations exchanged information, experiences and had fruitful discussion under the theme “Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Development in the Process of Urbanization”.
Director of Information and Public Relations of the ACC, Ms. Lada Phumas, introduced the ACC as well as its active roles to enhance ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, one of which is to support the activities and programmes which help narrow development gap. She also actively participated in the Forum’s discussion by taking a role as a commentator under one session. Director opined that poverty remains a major obstacle to all aspects of development for all developing countries. Poverty deserves to be placed high in national, regional and Post-2015 UN Development Agenda. Poverty reduction and sustainable social development are, therefore, among many others, common issues of interest which China and ASEAN could continue to work together.
