PHNOM PENH, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported 10,000 malaria cases in the first three months of 2014, down 9 percent from about 11,000 cases over the same period last year, a health official said Thursday.

"No fatality has been reported during the January-March period this year," said Char Meng Chuor, director of the National Center for Malaria, noting that over the same period last year, the disease killed three.

Based on the figures, it can be concluded that fatalities from malaria is no longer a threat to the Cambodian people, but more efforts are still needed towards the complete elimination of malaria by 2025, he said.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease, which is often found in rainy seasons and mostly happens in forest and mountainous provinces.

"To prevent the disease, residents living in malaria-prone areas should sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets all the time," he said.

Last year, the country reported 41,850 malaria cases, killing 12 people.
