In the evening of 23 June 2015, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) successfully held a welcoming reception in honour of H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, the newly appointed Secretary-General of ACC, at Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing. More than 300 guests, including Chinese Vice Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Ambassadors of Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and Pakistan to China and other diplomat envoys, representatives of international organizations, as well as representatives from relevant Chinese ministries and ASEAN-China business, education, culture, tourism and media agencies, were present at the reception.
H.E. Mr. Liu Zhenming, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Dato’ Zainuddin Yahya, Ambassador of Malaysia to China, as the current Chair of ASEAN, and H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, ACC Secretary-General, delivered speeches at the reception.
The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenming congratulated Mme. Yang Xiuping for her assumption of the post of Secretary-General of ACC. He commended the work of ACC since its establishment three years ago and emphasized a significance of ACC as an important platform to promote good neighborliness, fruitful cooperation, as well as trust and friendship between China and ASEAN. He expressed that cooperation between China and ASEAN is closer than ever before, and China-ASEAN relations have gained more strategic significance and global influence and now stand at a new historical point. ASEAN is a priority of China's neighborhood diplomacy. Mme. Yang is an expert on ASEAN-related matters, has experience, wisdom and is always full of energy, and has made great contribution to China-ASEAN relations. He was confident that ACC would make new progress under Secretary-General Yang’s leadership. As host country, the Chinese government would continue to support and facilitate the work of ACC and Secretary-General Yang.
H.E. Ambassador Dato’ Zainuddin Yahya of Malaysia, on behalf of ASEAN, welcomed and congratulated Mme. Yang Xiuping on her appointment as the new ACC Secretary-General. He expressed ASEAN’s full confidence in Secretary-General Yang to further deepen the close and cordial relations between ASEAN and China in trade, investment, tourism, education, culture and other sectors. ASEAN and China stood to benefit immensely from cooperation between both sides. Ambassador Yahya commended ACC’s contribution to promote ASEAN’s interest in China and vice versa, and pledged ASEAN’s continued fullest cooperation and assistance to Mme. Yang and her team. ASEAN and China, through ACC, would further promote ASEAN-China relations for the benefits of the peoples of both sides.
In response, ACC Secretary-General H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping expressed her sincere gratitude to the governments of China and ASEAN Member States for having great confidence in her, expressed thanks to the former Secretary-General Ma Mingqiang and all the ACC colleagues for their tremendous contribution to the development of ACC, and to the Embassies of ASEAN Member States in China, Chinese Embassies in ASEAN countries, Chinese Mission to ASEAN, and ASEAN friends from all walks of life in supporting the work of ACC.
Secretary-General Yang expressed that ASEAN-China relations have developed significantly both in-depth and all-round dimensions. ASEAN and China have jointly built the Golden Decade and entered a new era of the Diamond Decade. ASEAN and Chinese leaders have reached many important consensus to further deepening their cooperation. ASEAN and China cooperation would have greater potential and broader prospects. As the Secretary-General of ACC, she shall exert all the efforts to the best of ability, embark on pioneering with innovation, and together with all colleagues to advance ASEAN-China functional cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture and tourism.
The reception was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Participants welcomed and congratulated Mme. Yang on her assumption of the post of ACC Secretary-General, commended ACC’s constructive role in facilitating ASEAN-China cooperation, and looked forward to further enhancing communication and cooperation with ACC.
From 2012 to 2015, H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping served as the first resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to ASEAN in Jakarta, Indonesia. She assumed her office as the Secretary-General of ACC on 21 May 2015.
