On 3 August 2015, the Opening Ceremony of the China-ASEAN Innovation Achievements Expo in Marine Science and Technology was held in Guiyang, Guizhou Province. The Expo, as one of the activities of the 8th China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week (CAECW), was held by Tianjin University and supported by ASEAN-China Centre (ACC). Prof. Li Jiajun, President of Tianjin University, H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, Secretary-General of ACC, H.E. Theerakun Niyom, Ambassador of Thailand to China, Dr. Chantavit Sujatanon, Director of SEAMEO RIHED, Mr. Wang Jing, Director-General of Tianjin Municipal Education Department, experts in marine science, and officials and entrepreneurs from ASEAN and China attended the Opening Ceremony.
Prof. Li Jiajun expressed in his speech that the Expo, which covered areas of comprehensive utilization of seawater, marine biotechnology, marine observation and monitoring, marine engineering equipment, new marine energy, showcased the frontiers of marine research of ASEAN and China, as well as the broad prospect of ASEAN-China cooperation in marine science. He also expressed his gratitude to ACC for supporting the Expo and hoped ACC could continue to support Tianjin University in deepening collaboration with ASEAN universities and research institutes.
Secretary-General Yang congratulated the Opening of the Expo. She appreciated Tianjin University for organizing the event, which not only showcased the strength and advantage of ASEAN-China universities and research institutes in marine science and innovation, but also indicated the strong will of the two sides to deepen cooperation in marine science. She said 2015 marked the Year of China-ASEAN Maritime Cooperation and there was enormous potential and brighter future forASEAN-China cooperation in marine science. She hoped the Expo could be the new platform for cooperation between both sides.
Dr. Chantavit Sujatanon, Director of SEAMEO RIHED and Mr. Wang Jing, Director-General of Tianjin Municipal Education Department, in their remarks, fully recognized the significance of the Expo and appreciated ACC for its support. They hoped the Expo could further strengthen ASEAN-China cooperation in teaching and research of marine science and innovation, and would spare no efforts in promoting the cooperation between both sides.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Secretary-General Yang also received interviews by the media from the Guizhou Daily, Guiyang Evening Post,Western Development Daily and Colorful Guizhou.net. Secretary-General Yang introduced ACC’s role as the only inter-governmental organization co-founded by the governments of ASEAN Member States and China, as well as ACC’s efforts in promoting CAECW. She also answered questions on how the CAECW could positively influence ASEAN-China relations, trade cooperation, people-to-people exchanges and the future development of Guizhou Province.
