On 27 January 2016, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) Secretary-General H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping met with The Honorable Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education of Brunei. Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei Mr. Fu Fengshan attended the meeting.

Secretary-General Yang Xiuping expressed her appreciation to the Minister for his contributions to Brunei-China relations during his tenure as Minister of Health, Minister of Development and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She briefed on ACC’s mandates and work, stating that 2016 marked the ASEAN-China Year of Educational Exchange. ACC would spare no efforts to carry out a series of activities in collaboration with ASEAN countries, while Brunei’s participation would be welcomed.

Secretary-General Yang said that in recent years ACC had, in close collaboration with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), and organizations in charge of education of ASEAN Member States and relevant universities, successfully carried out a series of activities in vocational education, educational research, language and cultural training, all of which had been widely well acclaimed by the ASEAN side. ACC would take the opportunity of the Year of ASEAN-China Educational Exchange to set up more platforms for communication and exchange among the youth by hosting summer camps, sports games of ASEAN students in China and other activities.

Minister Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman fully affirmed ACC’s endeavours to promote ASEAN-China educational exchange and cooperation, stressing that Brunei students in China, albeit small in number, all cherished the opportunities to study in China and pledged to return to Brunei upon graduation to make their contributions to the economic and social development of Brunei. The Brunei side was always encouraging more young students to further their study in China so as to acquire new knowledge and skills, and broaden their visions. The Brunei side aspired to strengthen communication and share resources with ACC with a view to training more qualified people for the development of the country and the benefits to its people.
