On 27 January 2016, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) Secretary-General H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping met with The Honorable Pehin Datu Lailaraja Mejar Jeneral (B) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei. The meeting was attended by Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei Mr. Fu Fengshan.
Secretary-General Yang Xiuping briefed on ACC’s mandates and work, saying that cultural, youth and sports exchange formed an important component of ASEAN-China relations, and were ACC’s priority areas. During 2014 ASEAN-China Cultural Exchange Year, ACC organized leading Chinese cultural troupes and distinguished artists to give performances in ASEAN, which proved well acclaimed by the public. 2016 marked the ASEAN-China Year of Educational Exchange. ACC would carry out a series of youth exchanges, summer camps and sports games of ASEAN students in China with a view to strengthening mutual understanding and friendship between both sides. ACC would keep close contact with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Brunei to make joint efforts to push forward Brunei-China and ASEAN-China people-to-people exchange to a new stage.
Minister Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof affirmed ACC’s contributions to promoting ASEAN-China cultural and youth exchange, expressing that Brunei attached great importance to people-to-people exchange with China as well as exchange and cooperation with local governments in China. Bandar Seri Begawan had been playing an active role in carrying out projects of cooperation with Nanjing, its sister city in China. Jiangsu Province of China was scheduled to send arts troupes to Brunei to celebrate the Chinese New Year, whose wonderful performances were expected to have positive result in Brunei. The Brunei side hoped to, in collaboration with ACC, further explore new models of cultural exchange and strive for greater achievements in Brunei-China and ASEAN-China cultural exchange and cooperation.
