On 12 July 2016, the 1st ASEAN-China Youth Summer Camp (ACYSC), sponsored and hosted by ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), co-organized by China Education Association of International Exchange (CEAIE), Tianjin International Chinese College (TICC), was kicked off at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) in Beijing. The delegation, comprising of 33 students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam, China, Korea and Japan, and officials from the Embassies of ASEAN Member States in Beijing attended the Opening Ceremony. Mr. Tri Purnajaya, Director of Education Culture and Tourism Division (ECTD) of ACC, Ms. Elizabeth T. Te, Chargé d’ Affaires of the Embassy of the Philippines, Ms. Shen Xuesong, Deputy Secretary-General of CEAIE, Mr. Ma Tieshi, Deputy Director of Department of International Cooperation and Exchange of BLCU participated in the ceremony and delivered their respective remarks.
Director Tri Purnajaya welcomed all of the students to join the ACYSC, and expressed his sincere appreciation to CEAIE and BLCU for their strong support to ACC. He said that youth was our future, and shouldered responsibilities of future development, and believed that the ACYSC would serve as an excellent platform to facilitate communication and exchange, enhance mutual understanding and friendship among them.
Ms. Shen Xuesong of CEAIE, Ms. Elizabeth T. Te of the Embassy of the Philippines, Mr. Ma Tieshi of BLCU in their remarks positively affirmed the significance of this event, and highly praised ACC’s work. They encouraged the students could take this opportunity to learn more from each other, build trust and make friends, experience the culture of China, learn Chinese language, and gain more knowledge from the twelve-day life in China. The representatives from ASEAN and China also made a short presentations at the Opening Ceremony.
On the same day, the delegation also toured around the campus of BLCU to feel the atmosphere of Chinese University.
On 14 July 2016, the delegation of the ACYSC visited the ACC Secretariat in Beijing. ACC representatives from each division greeted the delegation. Dr. Mohd Rozi Ismail, Education Counsellor of Malaysian Embassy representing ASEAN participated in the event.
The delegation toured around ACC’s Exhibition Hall showcasing the history of ASEAN-China relations, ACC’ foundation and its efforts to promote ASEAN-China cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture and tourism. ECTD Director Mr. Tri Purnajaya of ACC chaired the meeting, and expressed his warm welcome to the delegation. Official of Information and Public Relations Division of ACC briefed the students on ACC’s overall work in the aforesaid five areas, and officials from other Divisions of ACC briefly introduced the work of their respective divisions. Dr. Mohd Rozi IsmailIn, on behalf of ASEAN, appreciated ACC’s thoughtful arrangement and highly praised ACC work. He was confident that the students would gain substantially through ACYSC, improve themselves in every aspect, thus contribute to the development of ASEAN-China relations in the future.
In the session of discussion and presentation, the students who were divided into four groups, gave their short self-introductions and enthusiastic presentations on the topics of Future Role of Youth on Trade and Investment, Education, Culture and Tourism. They thanked ACC for organizing this meaningful event, and discussed on the challenges and opportunities of the youth, and shared their views. They also received positive comments and reviews from the officials of ACC and ASEAN Embassy. The Meeting was very interactive with warm atmosphere.
Besides the aforementioned activities, the delegation also visited historical sites in Beijing and viewed Chinese traditional performance.
The 1st ACYSC will end until 22 July 2016. Beijing is the first stop for a four-day visit. The delegation will continue their trip to Tianjin for a seven-day of Chinese language and arts classes at TICC.
