From 6 to 7 August 2016, the 13th ASEAN Leadership Forum was held in Vientiane. H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), attended the forum and made remarks on the issue of ASEAN-China-Hong Kong relations. During the forum, Secretary-General Yang communicated with H.E. Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister of Lao PDR, H.E. Khemmani Pholsena, Minister of Industry and Commerce, H.E. Mr. Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, H.E. Mr. Hor Namhong, Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia, H.E. Than Myint, Minister of Commerce of Myanmar, H.E. Mr. Gregory So,Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Lim Hong Hin, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN, and other officials of ASEAN countries who attended the forum, and exchanged views on promoting ASEAN-China functional cooperation.
Secretary-General Yang Xiuping briefed the attendants on ACC’s mandates and its role in promoting functional cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture and tourism. She said ACC was committed to implementing the consensus reached by the leaders. By the end of 2015, ACC had organized or participated in about 500 activities, with fruitful results. From the beginning of 2016, ACC took the opportunity of the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations and ASEAN-China Year of Educational Exchange to actively implement 19 flagship projects and held 90 colourful activities including ASEAN-China Week. ACC would form synergy with all walks of life in ASEAN and China, and continue to serve as promoter of good-neighborliness and mutual trust, facilitator of functional cooperation and messenger of friendship to make greater contribution to ASEAN-China functional cooperation. ACC looked forwards to constant supports from all guests.
The attending dignitaries set a high value on the achievements of ACC and commended ACC’s efforts in this regard. They said that ACC provided an effective platform for promoting cooperation between both sides as an intergovernmental organization established by ASEAN countries and China. The year of 2017, marking the 50th anniversary of establishment of ASEAN, would offer a new opportunity for deepening cooperation between ASEAN and China. They wished ACC to continue to play a unique role in ASEAN-China relations.
During the forum, Secretary-General Yang Xiuping met with H.E Guan Huabing, Chinese Ambassador to Lao PDR, and exchanged views on promoting Lao PDR-China and ASEAN-China cooperation. Secretary-General Yang thought highly of the achievements in strengthening ASEAN-China relations by the Chinese Embassy in Lao PDR, and looked forwards to enhancing communication with the Embassy so as to make joint contribution to promoting pragmatic cooperation between ASEAN and China.
