On 17 November 2016, the representatives of the 6th Joint Council (JC) Meeting of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) visited Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Centre (HEMC). Permanent Representatives of Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Viet Nam to ASEAN, ACC Secretary-General H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, and officials of ASEAN countries and the Chinese Mission to ASEAN joined the visit.
At Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), Dr. Yan Guangmei, Vice President, briefed on the history and features of the university and its cooperation with ASEAN countries. He said that SYSU has signed agreements on cooperation with 26 colleges and universities in eight ASEAN countries. SYSU is currently receiving a total of 521 students from all 10 ASEAN countries on its campus. The Vice President looked forward to more exchanges of students and further strengthening cooperation in joint research between China and ASEAN countries. The head of the National Supercomputer Centre in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ, housed in SYSU) briefed on the Centre and its supercomputer “Tianhe-2”. The target of NSCC-GZ is to boost the development of emerging industries of strategic significance. It also serves as a first-class platform for the development of innovative cities and smart cities including Guangzhou by providing services in terms of big data storage, processing and computation. Aimed at becoming a world-class supercomputing centre, NSCC-GZ offers to provide a powerful engine for the social-economic development of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province and the whole country of China. It is ready to provide high-quality service to ASEAN countries on demand.
H.E. Mr. Tan Hung Seng, Permanent Representative of Singapore to ASEAN, expressed thanks to SYSU for its hospitality and said that ASEAN countries enjoy geographical proximity and a long history of friendly exchanges and cooperation with Guangdong Province. Both sides also have a huge potential to tap for further cooperation. Year 2016 is also the Year of ASEAN-China Educational Exchange, thus making the visit to the historical SYSU by representatives of the ACCJC meeting all the more significant. They hoped to see increase of the exchanges and cooperation between SYSU and ASEAN universities. The representatives also had a warm discussion with the ASEAN students at the meeting in a friendly and warm atmosphere.
On the same day, the representatives also visited Guangdong Chinese Medicine Museum located in Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine for a better understanding of the history of traditional Chinese medicine.
