Thadingyut Lighting Festival

Thadingyut is the seventh Myanmar month (in September – October) towards the end of the rainy season.Lord Gautama Buddha preached The Abhidhamma to Maidawmi Nat ( reincarnate of His Mother) in Tavatimsa Abode of celestial beings for three lenter months and returned to the abode of men on the full-moon day of Thadingyut. On account of that, Myanmar Buddhists celebrate the full-moon day with multi-coloured illuminations. Buildings and houses across the country are festive with coloured lights, paper lanterns and candles to welcome the Buddha. Night markets, food stalls, carnivals and concerts taking place everywhere and abundance of food and lights. In Myanmar, the day of the Lighting Festival is also the Respect for the Elder Festival and become a day of gratitude to the elder. An event respecting elder will be held during this period. No matter what kind of occupation, the level of the official position, the age whether in the city or the country, people will solemnly and officially bow down, offer gifts and listen to teaching to their parents and elders on this day.
