HO CHI MINH CITY, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnam International Fisheries Exhibition 2014 (Vietfish 2014) kicked off here on Wednesday, aiming at expanding ties between domestic and foreign partners in production and export of fisheries.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), during the three-day expo, 173 Vietnamese and foreign enterprises will display various products at 300 booths, including those from Vietnam's leading partners such as Japan, the United States, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and European countries. There are 12 Chinese companies participating in the expo.

There is also a large exclusive space featuring Vietnamese products, aiming at boosting the domestic market.

Sideline activities will also be held within the framework of Vietfish 2014, including a forum on sustainable development of Vietnamese Tra (pangasius) fish in the EU market with participation of specialists from many organizations, including the Global Good Agriculture Practice (GlobalGAP), the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), the World Wildlife Fund (WFF) and the VASEP.

In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam pocketed 4.2 billion U.S. dollars from seafood exports, an increase of 24.5 percent year on year.

The United States remained the biggest importer of Vietnamese fishery products, accounting for 22.65 percent of the market share, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
